If there’s one overarching quality that stands out about this web series, it is the power of restraint. Seething, simmering, burning, about to spill-over restraint.
Except the gore and grime of blood which is ubiquitous (in some cases unnecessary) and a part of visual calisthenics, everything is about control: controlled aggression, controlled rage and controlled retribution.

Each character operates with a certain integrity and defiance in the face of odds and deserves respect. Young women, free and uninhibited, break the mould of small-town shackles and leave a deep impact.
Pankaj Tripathi, steely, shifty and a master of understatement, delivers arguably the finest performance of his career so far. Ali Fazal, an absolute revelation after having beefed up for this role, plays a maverick madcap gangster living by the gun, one who simply explodes. Rasika Dugal morphs into a vessel of sexual energy and pays a heavy price.
Hauntingly beautiful musical score dots all the nine episodes.
Showrunner Karan Anshuman and director Gurmeet Singh need to be applauded for breaking the box. They did it and how!

Having watched the Wasseypur installments and Netflix’s sacred games, it(Mirzapur) did initially feel familiar and comfortable. However, as the episodes took a toll, it felt extremely disturbing yet being convincing in its own rights. It is undoubtedly the “cult favorite” of 2018.
