3 Indian Indie Films To Get Excited About In 2016-17

indie films side a side b

After titles like Waiting, Dhanak, ParchedU-Turn, here are some more interesting Indian indie films lined up for the rest of 2016 and early next year.

1. Side A Side B

The first teaser of Side A Side B, an indie musical romance, is just out! It’s fresh, it’s funny, it’s biting and it isn’t trying hard. The film explores the bittersweet heartache of first love through a 20-something couple who undertake a day-long train journey. Unlike other musicals, this one has the actors (Rahul Rajkhowa and Shivranjani Singh) perform live on-the-go in the film. The music (by Sudeep Swaroop) is fun, the lyrics (by film critic Raja Sen) catchy and I’m already falling in love with Rajkhowa, strumming away to Sexy Mama. Film critic-turned-filmmaker Sudhish Kamath’s Side A Side B is scheduled for release early next year.

Bonus: Kamath also has an untitled silent film lined up next, which he plans to shoot in Tokyo and Istanbul. (More here: In conversation with ‘Side A Side B’ director Sudhish Kamath)

PS: The lyrics of the song in the teaser are by Kamath.

2. Newton

A rookie clerk on an election duty, tries his best to conduct free and fair voting despite the apathy of security forces, in a strife-ridden jungle of Central India.

After a successful debut feature Sulemani Keeda, director Amir Masurkar is back with a black comedy Newton. It stars Rajkummar Rao, who found fame with Shahid and went on to deliver memorable performances in Citylights, Queen and Aligarh.

3. Moh Maya Money indie films

A young real-estate broker tries to pull off a huge scam, which goes horribly wrong. To fix it all, he involves his begrudging wife leading to an end neither could imagine.

Aftersun review 2022

Moh Maya Money is “compelling viewing,” as blogger friend Katherine Matthew points out in her review. “The film’s dialogues are crisp and clever, Munish Bhardwaj’s direction is meticulous, and the performances are spot on… But the real star of the film is the story itself, infused with Delhi noir and enough twists to keep us guessing till the very end.

The film is slated for release November 25, 2016.
