From the makers of the Tanu Weds Manu comes another family entertainer themed around a wedding; a runaway bride. I’m not a fan of the first part; Tanu Weds Manu Returns was way better. Happy Bhag Jayegi doesn’t compare to the latter but makes for a fun watch, nevertheless. It’s sprinkled with hilarious one-liners and dialogues but more than that it’s the crazy, sometimes silly situations, the characters end up in, that evoke laughs.
The film comes with its share of clichés but is still a one-time watch. It could’ve been a lot of better in terms of writing — characters, for instance. Diana Penty’s was a very thinly written part. Being the protagonist, I wish the focus was more on her; why she made certain decisions, how she grew up to become what she had etc. Happy Bhag Jayegi instead keeps its focus on the three men in love with her.
Needless to say, the three men — Guddu (Ali Fazal), Bagga (Jimmy Shergill), Bilal (Abhay Deol) gave the best performances along with ACP Afridi (Piyush Mishra), who also had some of the best dialogues in the film. After a long break, Diana is back as Happy, a role in complete contrast to her first (Meera in Cocktail). She shows promise in this one and is clearly better than her first. And what an absolute treat to look at! She is, inarguably, the most good looking face around.
Abhay Deol and Piyush Mishra do complete justice to their parts, holding the film throughout.

But it’s Jimmy Sheirgill who takes the cake (if not the girl) in Happy Bhag Jayegi.
If there’s one reason you should watch the film, it has to be him. He makes even the most simple lines sound funny with the way he delivers them. He makes you sit up and watch every time he’s on screen. The actor commands attention, like none other. And what timing! He floundered in some of his early films. But this is his genre. He owns it. High time, someone taps into this potential and writes a script only for him. He deserves more screen time than he’s had in his recent few outings.
Overall, Happy Bhag Jayegi is the kind of the film, you wouldn’t mind on a lazy weekend, when you have nothing better to do.
