16 Hollywood Movies We’re Excited About In 2019

new movies coming out 2019

[Updated: August 7, 2019] With almost half of 2019 done, we’ve seen some pretty fantastic movies so far. Box office blockbusters, action thrillers, Oscar contenders, you name it. No surprises for naming the most successful one thus far. Let’s now take a look at what we’re left with for the rest of the year. Here are all the new movies coming out in 2019:

1. Rocketman (May 31)

We had a movie for Queen sometime last year. We had a Mötley Crüe movie on Netflix a few months ago. Now we have a third musical biopic in less than a year, based on the life of the legendary Elton John, titled Rocketman. Starring rising British star Taron Egerton as the legendary musician, the movie is directed by Dexter Fletcher, who also directed the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody. The movie received a standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival, so one can assume it’s pretty damn good.

2. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (May 31)

Everyone’s favourite monster is back in the sequel to Godzilla, with Michael Dougherty taking the reins after reboot director Gareth Edwards took a break post filming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Starring Vera Farmiga, Sally Hawkins, Millie Bobby Brown, and Kyle Chandler, Godzilla (2019) will see only one original star return (Ken Watanabe will reprise his role as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa).

3. X-Men: Dark Phoenix (June 7)

The first X-Men movie after Hugh Jackman’s departure from the franchise with Logan, this film centers on Jean Grey (played by Sophie Turner) and her inability to control her unstable powers, which unleashes the Dark Phoenix. Adapted from Marvel Comics’ The Dark Phoenix Saga, the film stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain. It is scheduled to release on June 7 in the United States.

4. Men in Black: International (June 14)

Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson reunite in yet another Marvel franchise! Not the MCU this time, but Men in Black. With Hemsworth and Thompson in yet another sci-fi comedy, this movie is set to be a fun ride. Starring the likes of Hemsworth, Thompson, Rebecca Ferguson, Liam Neeson, Kumail Nanjiani and Emma Thompson, with F.Gary Gray (of Straight Outta Compton fame), MiB looks to new days, being the first movie not to feature Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones.

5. Child’s Play (June 21)

The toy that terrorized a whole generation is back searching for new targets. Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry star with Lars Klevberg taking the helm, fresh off his other movie released this year, Polaroid. The story follows a mother who gifts her child a toy, unaware of the evil it harbours. Child’s Play releases June 21.

6. Toy Story 4 (June 21)

Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz (Tim Allen) are back in this sequel to Toy Story 3 after a 9-year hiatus. Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending to a beautiful trilogy that captured the hearts of adults and children alike. So why does Pixar want to make a fourth film which may ruin the franchise’s stellar reputation? We’ll find out on June 21.

7. Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 2)

This movie is essentially a HUGE spoiler for those of you who still haven’t watched Avengers: Endgame, so tread lightly. Tom Holland is back as everyone’s favourite wall-crawler, still reeling from the events of Endgame. The sequel to 2014’s Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Peter and his friends take a vacation to Europe, where Peter has to answer to the call of duty when he encounters super-spy Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal).

8. The Lion King (July 19)

After the huge success of The Jungle Book, Jon Favreau is back with the live adaptation of the beloved Disney classic, The Lion King. The cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé as Nala, and James Earl Jones returning to the role of Mufasa. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, prepare to have your mind BLOWN!

9. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (July 26)

For the record, this is my most awaited film of the year. With a killer cast, comprising superstars such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino among others, Quentin Tarantino is back for his 10th feature film. The story revolves around an actor Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and his stunt double (Cliff Booth) while they make their way in Hollywood in 1969, just when the Manson murders are about to take place. Typical Tarantino.

10. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (August 2)

Fast and Furious takes a turn to buddy comedy realms as Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham team up in yet another audacious, ridiculous, entertaining action flick directed by David Leitch. The movie releases on August 2.

11. IT Chapter Two (September 6)

IT Chapter Two follows up from the 2017’s IT. The sequel takes place 30 years after the events of the first film, with a grown-up cast including the likes of Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, and Bill Hader, among others, and the evil clown Pennywise, reprised by Bill Skarsgård makes a return.

12. Ad Astra (September 20)

The film stars Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga and Donald Sutherland. With James Gray taking the helm, it tells the story of an engineer (Pitt) who embarks on a space voyage in pursuit of his father (Jones), who had gone missing on a trip to Neptune 20 years earlier. The trailer is now out.

13. Joker (October 4)

When news broke out that Joaquin Phoenix would star as the Clown Prince of Crime in a standalone movie, fans went berserk. So you can imagine their reactions when the haunting, chilling first teaser of Joker was posted on YouTube. With Todd Phillips (The Hangover) set to direct, the cast includes Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, Robert de Niro among other actors. From the trailer, it looks as if Phoenix is making an early claim for the Best Actor Academy Award.

14. Jojo Rabbit (October 18)

During World War II, a lonely German boy Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) discovers that his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. Taika Waititi, who also stars as Jojo’s imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler, has directed the film. After his success with Thor: Ragnarok, this wild tale will surely turn heads upon its release.

15. Ford v. Ferrari (November 15)

In a film which depicts the legendary rivalry between Henry Ford II and Enzo Ferrari in their battle at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race, Logan director James Mangold takes the helm with an all-star cast comprising Christian Bale, Matt Damon and Jon Bernthal among other actors. Details of the film have been scarce so far, but the cast is enough to get cinephiles excited.

16. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (December 20)

J.J Abrams is back after Rian Johnson’s not-so-spectacular The Last Jedi. The Rise of Skywalker marks the end of the Skywalker saga of Star Wars films, and looks to move forward with more stories in a galaxy far, far away. With Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Issac, John Boyega and Lupita Nyong’o reprising their roles from The Last Jedi, the film also sees a shocking return of an old villain, Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), which got fans even more excited for the film. This will be the last film in the Skywalker saga, with Game of Thrones showrunners DB Weiss and David Benioff set to take the helm for the next trilogy of Star Wars films.
